Russian politicians hold visa-free talks with EU
15 March 2010
Return to index
The European Union (EU) and Russia have been discussing plans to scrap visas between the territories.
Potentially generating more jobs between the two jurisdictions, the proposals have been debated during a summit, RIA Novosti reports.
Commenting on the talks, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said: "I see the political will of many EU members to introduce a visa-free regime, a will expressed at the highest level."
He explained that a consensus on the issue is being sought between EU member states and if an agreement is reached on requirements regarding the impact on non-EU nations and the security of Russian borders then a deal is likely to follow.
According to Mr Lavrov, he hopes that the deal will come out of a Russia-EU summit in late May and early June this year.
In the EU, a recent study by the European Commission called for the creation of more education jobs in order to encourage more people from socially disadvantaged and older age groups to study.
