Too few jobs for NHS dentists

23 December 2011
There are too few jobs available in the UK for newly trained dental students, despite the fact that the government has spent heavily on dental schools.

It costs £250,000 per graduate to gain the training they need to be able to work in the NHS, but despite this, the Telegraph says that there are still nowhere near enough positions for those who graduate, as 100 have been left without a place on the postgraduate schemes.

Competition from overseas students has also made it harder for Brits, who have to choose between going into private courses, which exclude them fr om working in the NHS, or practicing overseas.

A dental student told the Daily Telegraph: "The cost of setting these dental schools up and of training the students is completely wasted if there are not vocational places for all the UK students who need them."

Inmycommunity recently reported that dentists in Australia face a similar problem, with jobs filling up fast, and students struggling to find employment.
