Tribunal numbers drop in the third quarter of 2011

14 January 2012
The number of new employment tribunal cases in the UK in the second half of 2011 saw a significant drop, as companies were brought to court by far fewer employees than in the past, new statistics have shown.

It has been revealed by the Ministry of Justice that between July and September of 2011, there were 40,300 cases brought to the courts for various employment related complaints.

This figure was around 30 per cent less than in the year prior. The biggest decrease was seen in cases with multiple claimants, which fell by 41 per cent, while single claimant cases fell by one per cent.

Tribunals in the UK have come under scrutiny recently however, as it was revealed in December that claimants would need to pay a fee of £1,000 to bring a case to court, which Brendan Barber of the Trade Union Congress said would penalise those in the lowest paying jobs.
