UK workers do more overtime

06 January 2012
UK workers do more unpaid overtime than the rest of Europe, according to the results of a new survey.

Figures released by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have shown that Brits are working a collective two million hours of overtime a year without remuneration.

The survey found that 5.3 million workers in the UK worked an average of 7.2 hours per week of unpaid overtime in 2011. If this was paid work, it would end up being £5,300 per person on average per year.

This has been attributed to the fact that there were only 41 million hours of paid overtime available over the year to UK workers, a massive decrease from 54 million at the peak of the market in 2007.

Similarly, last month, workers in Wales were feeling the financial pinch, as families had to face up to the fact that there had been a decrease of 37 per cent in the amount of overtime available in the country.
