US manufacturing employment increases

02 November 2011
The US manufacturing industry has seen a rise in the number of jobs between September and October this year.

According to data from the nation's Institute for Supply Management (ISM), supply executives reported additional hiring in eight out of 18 sectors of production, with textile mills, primary metals and fabricated metal products businesses hiring most.

The latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business reveals that new orders and production activity also increased last month, although there was a decline in supplier deliveries and inventories over the period.

In addition, the purchasing managers' index (PMI) stood at 50.8 per cent for October, with any number above 50 indicative of growth.

This marks the 27th monthly expansion of activity in the sector, but was a dip from 51.6 per cent in September.

October national data for US employment will be published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday (November 4th).

ISM manufacturing business survey committee chair Bradley Holcomb remarked: "Comments from respondents are mixed, indicating positive relief from raw materials pricing and continuing strength in a few industries, but there is also more concern and caution about growth."
