US October employment figures increase

08 November 2010
Data for the US show that employment rates rose during October this year.

Published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the figures reveal a climb of 151,000 in non-farm payroll employment over the month.

Despite the increase, the rate of joblessness remained steady for the month at 9.6 per cent.

According to the BLS Employment Situation report, the number of people in non-farm payroll positions has risen by 974,000 since December 2009.

The US currently has 14.8 million individuals out of work, while the number employed part-time for economic reasons dipped by 318,000 in October to 9.2 million following two months of increases.

Jobs gains were recorded in the mining and services sectors to push up non-farm payroll employment, including jumps in the numbers of temporary help services, healthcare, computer systems and retail trade roles.

The latest BLS data comes shortly after a report from payroll specialist ADP showed private sector jobs grew by 43,000 in the month between September and October, as small firms fuelled employment.
