The chief minister of West Bengal is planning to focus on generating more IT jobs in India, he has announced.

According to the Business Standard, Mamata Banerjee is keen to ensure the technology sector is successful and has held meetings with industry leaders regarding the issue.

She is reportedly hoping that IT will provide more employment opportunities for people in the region, which has problems with debt, proposing the creation of IT hubs in each district.

The minister said this could "give employment to the youth that has been forced to move out because of absence of work" from the region of eastern India.

In addition to driving up work for individuals in computing, Ms Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), wants to focus on the development of the tourism industry, as West Bengal has a shortage of land that prevents some sectors from expanding.

Ms Banerjee is in charge of a number of departments in the state, including agriculture and Information and Cultural Affairs.
