Australian jobs growth 'outstrips five-year average'
19. juni 2010
Return to index
Employment rates in Australia over the quarter to the end of May stood substantially above a five-year average of 53,500.
During the period in question, the number of jobs in the country grew by 92,200 and CommSec chief economist Craig James has remarked that this has been driven by transport and construction positions.
He was commenting on the latest figures from the national Bureau of Statistics, which showed particularly strong growth in the mining sector, something that may interest those seeking engineering jobs in Australia.
"It used to be that school-leavers had designs on becoming a teacher, doctor or banker," Mr James stated, adding that this pattern has changed and now "it looks like young people will have an interest in becoming an architect, carpenter or engineer".
Official figures showed Australia's unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points to 5.2 per cent in May this year, with the number of people in work rising during the month by 26,900.
