EU commissioner calls for new jobs strategy
15. januar 2010
Return to index
The incoming European Union (EU) employment commissioner has identified job creation as the main priority during his tenure.
Laszlo Andor, a Hungarian economist, has claimed that Europe must tackle the labor market effects of the most serious economic crisis since the great depression of the 1920s.
The designated commissioner for employment and social affairs explained that the most vulnerable demographics have been affected by the downturn and that preventing further job losses is essential.
Mr Andor suggested that bringing the employment rate, which currently stands near double digits, back to a pre-recession level will require a rethink of the region's Lisbon Strategy.
He said: "We will need new jobs which will require new skills. In this context, active labor market policies, lifelong learning, training and tailored support for jobseekers are vital."
Mr Andor will take over the role presently occupied by the Czech politician Vladimir Spidla.
