EU provides funding to assist former Irish workers

10. mai 2010
EU provides funding to assist former Irish workersA total of just under €2.6 million has been allocated by the European Union (EU) to former workers and suppliers from Waterford Crystal to assist them in seeking new employment.

The application from Ireland has been approved by the European Commission and is intended to help 598 ex-employees of the glass company to enhance their skills and find a new job.

Money for the scheme is being provided by the European Globalisation adjustment Fund, with a final green light required from the Council of the EU and the European Parliament.

EU commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion Laszlo Andor has suggested the extra cash will "help cushion this dramatic change by helping workers better prepare for and find new opportunities", as the recent downturn has particularly affected the luxury items market.

The European Commission is also considering an application from Spain to provide financial support to help 2,157 people made redundant in Castilla La Mancha's construction sector to find new jobs.
