Greener economy 'could create more EU jobs'
10. mai 2010
Return to index
Creating a greener economy could generate more opportunities for work within the European Union (EU) in all regions and for people of all levels of skill, in addition to tackling climate change.
This is the view of the European commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion, who has claimed creating jobs is "a top priority" for the EU and a low-carbon economy offers new opportunities within the renewable energy, transport and construction sectors.
Speaking in Brussels on climate change and social justice, Laszlo Andor declared there "is every reason to develop and apply green technologies as quickly as possible".
He told a gathering at the King Baudouin Foundation people should be prepared to take advantage of new jobs in a green economy and reduce pollution levels.
Mr Andor added social cohesion and sustainable development should be "mutually supportive" to ensure vulnerable groups are not negatively affected by the transition.
His comments come after the Nielsen Company reported a rise in its Global Consumer Confidence Index, indicating confidence is growing worldwide about the future prospects for jobs and the employment market.
