Turkish unemployment rises less than predicted

17. februar 2010
Turkish unemployment rises less than predictedUnemployment in Turkey continued to rise in November, although at a lower rate than expected by national analysts.

The Turkish Statistics Institute disclosed that the national unemployment rate increased to 13.1 per cent in the period last year, which is a 0.5 per cent rise on October's results but 0.2 per cent less than forecasted in a Bloomberg poll.

The household labor force survey revealed that the number of individuals without employment rose by 233,000 year-on-year to reach 3.21 million - with joblessness more common in urban areas.

The data agency also disclosed that non-agricultural unemployment grew by 0.7 per cent to 16.2 per cent in November, while the youth jobless rate increased to 24.4 per cent.

Following the release of these figures, the Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman suggested that unemployment remains a problem for the Eurasian country's politicians and represents a "human aspect to economic recovery".

Last month, the Council of Europe claimed that Turkey's migrant worker controls are in breach of the European Social Charter because of the country's restrictive allocation of work permits to non-nationals.ADNFCR-1275-ID-19617592-ADNFCR
